People, events, connections, evidence, diagrams and reports.
Genealogy links people, events and evidence in the Connections workspace graph. The same data feeds genealogical diagrams, reports and family spread maps. Put image sources in Multimedia first.
Genealogy entry wizard
Open Entry wizard… from the Connections toolbar or the Genealogy node's context menu. When starting from the node, choose an existing graph or create a new one.
- Start with a register or other evidence: select a page or image, mark a crop, enter its transcription, choose an event and assign people to roles.
- Start with a person and family relationships: select or create a person, enter known life facts and gradually add parents, children or a spouse. Attach evidence later.
The people list lets you move between branches and generations. Family actions always apply to the currently selected person. Select an existing person explicitly; a matching name does not establish identity. If several events are suitable, choose the specific record to supplement.
Check the summary and conflicts before finishing. Cancel leaves the project unchanged; Finish saves the whole proposal as one Undo step and opens the destination Connections graph. The wizard does not invent a page or evidence for facts entered without a source.
Recommended manual entry workflow
- Add a page: in this context, a photograph of a register page.
- On the page box, choose Create evidence from crop. In the page preview, mark the line containing the person's record. Optionally add its transcription in the Transcription property.
- Select the record box and add an Event, or insert one through the toolbar's Add dropdown.
- The default event type is Birth. Enter as much information from the register crop as possible in Properties.
- Add objects for the principal person (the child), father and mother, and fill in their properties.
- The Event is the main source of relationships. Connect the principal person first: right-click the event box, choose Add person, then click the person. Read the father and mother from the event and connect them similarly through Other person.
For a marriage, use Add bride and Add groom instead of Add person.
People, life facts and events
Edit names and basic attributes on the person. Birth, death and other life facts belong to a linked event; the person's displayed values are derived and read-only. People and events can exist without an image source.
Events have principal people and additional roles according to type. Assign the groom and bride explicitly; identity is not inferred from order or gender. The context menu can replace or detach a person in a role. One person cannot occupy both spouse roles.
Parent-child and marital relationships are derived from events and roles. Parents recorded at a marriage or death do not thereby acquire an invented birth date for the child. Mentioning parents does not prove their marriage. Multiple sources for the same relationship are combined; removing one leaves relationships supported by another intact. Conflicts are flagged, not automatically merged.
Working in Connections
Use filters for object types, scope and relationships, layout commands and zoom. Selecting an object displays its Properties. Restrict the visible scope for large graphs; filtering does not change saved records. The context menu of a derived relationship can navigate to its source events.
Evidence and a person's documentation
Import an image into Multimedia, then attach a page or evidence in the graph with a crop, transcription and event link. Distinguish source evidence for an event from a person's general image documentation.
Documentation… on a person in the graph or hierarchy attaches an image, crop, existing manuscript or manuscript page. Choose an image from the project or a file. Edit the attachment's caption and note; detaching does not delete the original object. Dragging an image onto a person offers documentation or portrait. Documentation / usage… on multimedia shows the reverse view of the same links.
Genealogical diagrams and reports
Create genealogical diagram… opens a wizard for selecting people and diagram settings. The diagram supports zoom, person frame templates and export to PDF or raster image. Manage frame templates through Tools → Templates… and exchange them as JSON.
Reports and templates include People overview, Image documentation, People with images and Genealogical diagram. Generated output is a saved snapshot; later data changes do not regenerate it automatically.
Import and export
Import accepts GEDCOM and GEDZIP 7; export offers GEDCOM 7, GEDCOM 5.5.1 and GEDZIP 7. See Import and export for details and interoperability limits.
