Multimedia

Import, organisation, previews, metadata and image editing.

Each supported module can have its own Multimedia node. Store images here first; other views can reference them.

Import files

  1. Open the destination multimedia folder.
  2. Choose Import… from its context menu or drag files in from the operating system.
  3. Check the name, file availability and metadata in Properties.

Supported image formats depend on Qt and the installation; verify them in the application.

List and thumbnails

Use View → Multimedia to switch between List and Thumbnails. Set the default for newly opened views in Settings. Cmd+A selects all items in the active multimedia view.

Context menu

Depending on the selection, the main actions are:

  • Preview / Edit;
  • Show in Finder;
  • Locate file… to repair a missing path;
  • Move to… and Copy to…, with destination selection;
  • Remove;
  • Import….

Linking an image to a module, for example adding a manuscript page, is different from moving the source file.

Edit an image

The image editor offers fit, actual size, zoom, export, overwrite file, Eraser, rotation, flipping, reset and Image adjustments. Adjustments may include colour mode, brightness, contrast, black and white points, threshold, sharpening and inversion.

Overwriting the source file differs from non-destructive adjustments recorded in the project; check the confirmation dialog first.

Source metadata

A multimedia folder can hold the source type, archive, collection and shelfmark. Images may inherit these as read-only attributes and add their own details. Available fields depend on source type.

Attached external directories

Attach external directory…, in a normal folder's context menu or image picker, attaches a directory and its subfolders. Files stay in their original location. Use Refresh from disk on the attachment root; files at the same relative path retain their identity and references. A renamed file is treated as new, while an old file still in use remains marked unavailable.

The first edit of an external image creates a project copy under Edited images. Existing documentation still references the original until you explicitly select the copy.

Removing an attached folder removes only the link, not disk files. Used images remain recorded as detached; edited copies survive in normal folders. Undo restores the operation. Detached subfolders can be enabled at the root and loaded by another refresh.

Documentation and usage

Documentation / usage… shows the image's links to other objects. A person's attachment can be opened, captioned, given a formatted note or detached. Detaching documentation does not remove the image. See Genealogy.
